Art School for Rebel Girls 2019

Alt text

Art School for Rebel Girls is an ongoing arts project fostering confidence, creativity and collaboration between young women in Leeds. Supported by Soroptimist International Leeds the initiative is now in its second year.

There is a mental health crisis amongst teens in the UK which has been linked to austerity, pressure from school, changes in the ways young people are socialised, gender expectations and the emotional demands of appearance-focused social media. This is exasperated by increasingly outcome driven school curriculums and a decline in creative subjects that provide space for self-expression, playfulness, exploration and dialogue.

Art School for Rebel Girls offers a freer and more expansive approach to art and inspires young women to value themselves, to believe they can succeed, and to think big.

This year, girls from Carr Manor Community School and The Co-operative Academy of Leeds are working together to create artworks that interrogate their place in the world; from large-scale gestural painting to stop-motion animation. As the existing cohort from Year 10 develop their creative voices, 2019 sees the collective expand to include new younger members from Year 9.

Alongside activity in Leeds, the group is also undertaking its first international project, a remote creative exchange with girls of the same age in West Java, Indonesia which will result in the development of a shared language consisting of pictures and objects.

This year’s programme culminates with a Spring Workshop at Pavilion and University of Leeds from Tuesday 9 April to Friday 12 April. The intensive programme includes print workshops with artist Helen De Main, curating sessions with the Pavilion team, and a visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
