October’s Leeds Art Walk focuses on New Contemporaries, an annual survey of work by recent art school graduates, now in its 70th year.  

Established in 1949, New Contemporaries is an annual open submission exhibition offering recent art graduates from across the UK a chance to exhibit their work for the first time. Charged with the task of reflecting and responding to the changing face of visual art, films began to feature from 1965 onwards. Editions from the 1980s onwards saw an increase in moving image work by students from art colleges in the north of England and Scotland.

5.30pm: Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2019, at Leeds Art Gallery, The Headrow, Leeds, LS1 3AA.

Introduction to BNC19 from the Curatorial team at Leeds Art Gallery.  This year’s edition features 45 artists selected by Rana Begum, Sonia Boyce and Ben Rivers.

6.15pm: Screening of artists’ moving image work at Pavilion, 42 New Briggate, Leeds, LS1 6NU.

Leeds Art Walk takes place every month and is free to attend. Just turn up at 5.30pm or join us along the way.
